In China, homosexuality has been ignored and discriminated against due to the family-oriented tradition and various political reasons, which has led to tremendous long-term challenges for the MSM population in access to safer-sex information. On the other hand, with the proliferation of internet and rapid economic development and urbanization in China, casual sex is readily available for this population. Such a contradiction between MSM population's sexual liberation and the lack of safer-sex practice has resulted in the rapid increase of infection rate of AIDS/STD among the population in recent years. According to statistics by Bill & Malinda Gates Foundation, the average HIV infection rate in the year of 2009 among MSM population in major Chinese cities was 5-6%, and at some MSM venues like saunas in certain cities the infection rate was as high as around 10%. The infection rate of syphilis was typically around 10%.
